Festivals and Events have a monthly event down in Georgetown called Upper Penang Town, every last sunday of the month. The team finds dying arts and crafts of local people and persuade them to show off their skills. These can be helpful to some business folks as some of their shops with good stuff but in unknown quiet places. Penang locals are warm and respectful of their elders. And with our hectic busy life, every chance of bonding is important and a priority. They find time to meet and to forge closer relationships with their siblings and elders. So you wont be surprised to see, in any outings the whole family of over ten to fifteen people in two to three cars will meet for food or Festival Events. With different communities living in harmony, Penang is indeed fortunate to see the three generations going everywhere together, be it a weekend outing or Festivals Events. There is always a good reason to meet. If there are no festivals, we look out for events.
There are the community awareness events, heritage conservation projects events. I specially made efforts to go to organized events like one held in Lake town in January 2007. I am impressed with our local talents, some pensioners making efforts to have active hobbies. I see young parents sharing some stories of certain handicrafts or arts which is found in this kind of Festivals Events. See some photos of arts and crafts by our Penang Locals.
Rahim the artist at work. I see many people eating lemang and ketupat, our Malay delicacy. Joanna beadwork is quite impressive. Most important for me was I had the opportunity to meet a few of the handicrafts makers and am happy to share them with you. And it is very heartening to see people willingly to purchase from our local talents. Some does it as a hobbies and I can see some dying art, some creative people too.
Wooden clogs are a rarity now. We wore this in the 50's to the 70's. Jennifer teaches brush painting and sold her work through word of mouth.Jerk Choo my lost found friend of twenty years took over her father shop to sell rattan craft and works.
Uncle Ee in his 70's hands with arthritis yet making an effort to show his love of origami. Mr Chean, a teacher and pensioner goes around down to get his wood. He uses recycle wood for his hobby of wooden collectibles. Teacher Wee from Pangkor, got up at 4 am and drove all the way to Penang to show his IQ works.
